Tuesday Tunes February Flashback With @JoyfullySober – Stars on the Water By George Straight

Tuesday Tunes Song of the Week: Stars on the Water

Artist:  George Strait

I know this is going to come as a shock to all of you but, I am in fact a bad dancer.  I know, it’s hard to believe because let’s be honest the moves I have now are FIERCE!

I have always been a bad dancer and I am ok with that.  This song flashes me back to the time that I realized it, in public.

I was $20 deep into .69 cent night at a Country Bar in Austin TX (whose name escapes me now) and my boyfriend at the time whisked me out onto the dancefloor to two-step to the GOAT George Strait.

He quickly realized I was definitely from the north and was absolutely atrocious at this time-honored tradition of partner dancing.  He subsequently left me on the dance floor to complete my version of the two-step which may or may not have included a floor spin on my butt and a version of the worm that looked more like a dying seal.

Oddly enough I got asked to dance by 20 (yes you read that right) other gentlemen that evening and all proceeded to abandon me on the dance floor.  Maybe the dying seal is what attracted them? I’m not sure.

I had a blast that night. Was it the alcohol or was it the dancing?  Not sure but I still think back and laugh at how bad of a dancer I am and how it became abundantly clear that night.  I didn’t care what people thought about me that night.  I also realized that night that most people care about what they are doing to care about what you are doing. I am so grateful for this lesson in “do what makes you happy.”

When I got sober I was worried I would loose the ability to dance and have fun. I am here to tell you: bad sober dancing is FUN.  You can let loose and enjoy it or you can sit on the sidelines.  Your choice.

I choose to do it and do it as badly as I can.  As my beautiful friend Alysse and creator of The Sober Curator says…sober not boring! See you on the dance floor!

PLAY IT AGAIN! Music can instantly transport you to another state of mind and alter your mood in a heartbeat. So, of course, we’re curating the greatest recovery tunes for our The Ultimate Sober Playlist.  This section features select songs that represent some part of our journey and serve as sobriety anthems in reminding us to stay the course. These are the ones that have us saying “Play It Again” and always end up on repeat. No decade or genre is off-limits. Happy listening!

What’s your sobriety theme song?  If there is a song you think should be on our playlist, we want to hear about it.  Send your requests to [email protected]
