The Daily Llama brings you short, one-word meditations and a corresponding quote for your complete wool-being (#seewhatwedidthere?) for Monday, May 24th – Friday, May 28th, 2021.

MONDAY, MAY 24TH

THE DAILY LLAMA WORD OF THE DAY: SEEK

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

MEDITATE ON THIS:

In 2015, the dating app business generated $1.69 billion in revenue. In 2020, the dating app industry nearly doubled in revenue, creating near $3.08 billion in revenue. Business experts predict that by the year 2025, the dating app industry will generate $5.71 billion. These entrepreneurs know what most of us already know:  people are incredibly lonely and just want to be loved.

The desire to be loved is fundamental to being human, and yet most of us get in our own way when it comes to love. When we don’t participate in our own healing process, we are more likely to attract drama than we are to attract love. If we don’t work on our stuff, we will continue to attract fixers and controllers rather than lovers and equal partners.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to identify the barriers within yourself that you have built against love, and then work to remove them.

TUESDAY, MAY 25TH

THE DAILY LLAMA WORD OF THE DAILY: FIND

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

MEDITATE ON THIS:

We don’t always have the answer to our problems right away. This confusion makes it tempting to steal somebody else’s answer to our problems. By all means, when confused, we should seek wisdom from our community. But at the end of the day, the critical thinking that needs to happen must be our own. If we try to shortcut our own thinking and fail to take responsibility for our actions and decisions, we make it easier for us to fall back into the pattern of blaming and being a victim.

Wake up. Look inside yourself. Find your truth. And let it be yours.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 26TH

THE DAILY LLAMA WORD OF THE DAY: AMEND

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

MEDITATE ON THIS:

The majority of religious or spiritual traditions address the concept of repairing harm caused by human actions (or even lack of action). The concept of making amends does not belong to the 12 Step Tradition alone. The practice of apologizing and seeking to repair a relationship is universal across culture, time and geography. Nobody owns the copyright to the act of apologizing, but many have come up with blueprints to what constitutes good atonement and restitution.

Gary Chapman, the author of The Five Love Languages, came up with The Five Apology Languages, which are:  1) expressing regret, 2) accepting responsibility, 3) making restitution, 4) genuinely repenting, and 5) requesting forgiveness. His point that the best apologies use all five languages. Because we may not know for sure which apology language is important to someone else, by using all five, we are bound to meet the emotional need of the person we hurt.

Learning how to apologize effectively is key to maintaining relationships with self and others. And in the words of Benjamin Franklin, “Never ruin an apology with an excuse.”

THURSDAY, MAY 27TH

THE DAILY LLAMA WORD OF THE DAY: STYLE

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

MEDITATE ON THIS:

Many of us have spent so many years engaging in self-rejecting behaviors that we have a lost connection to our true selves. We have expended an incredible amount of energy in the creation of elaborate masks and costumes that we present to the world to minimize rejection and protect our vulnerabilities. Self-rejection is essentially the same as self-abandonment, and until you fix that pattern, you will always feel alone and unloved until the most important person in your life loves and accepts you. That person is you.

Self-acceptance never goes out of style.

FRIDAY, MAY 28TH

THE DAILY LLAMA WORD OF THE DAY: BLOCK

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

MEDITATE ON THIS:

One of the cognitive distortions that can develop in us is a pattern of disqualifying the positive. When we hold on to certain negative beliefs, it distorts our view of ourselves, others, and the world where we filter out the positive and focus on the negative.

This way of thinking leads us to think that good thing “doesn’t count” or “happen by chance or luck,” and thus we tend to minimize the amount of good we can see in ourselves or others. It also leads us to hyper-focus, dwell, or deeply internalize the negative.

In recovery, we practice reversing our thinking. We work on seeing the positive side of things and speaking positively about ourselves and others. We rehearse our ability to block negative thinking, and we strive to limit negative self-talk and gossip. This takes a lot of work because our brains have been operating a different way for a long time.
