Summer Sipping: Discover the Blue Prickly Non-Alcoholic Cocktail

Recipes and photo credited to Kim Parsley of The Happy Traveler

Summer is right around the corner for those living in the Northern Hemisphere. And if you’re like me, your drinking habits are about to shift with the warmer weather. Gin and tonics, mojitos, and citrus smashes come to mind. When I first started experimenting with non-alcoholic (NA) spirits, I came across Seir Hill’s rum alternative.

I was very excited by this spirit’s ability to remind me of rum immediately. No doubt the balance of aromas and flavors hit you – specifically the sugar cane and caramel that you expect. This alcohol-free product, named Biscane, is dark in color, so I wanted to create something other than a Mojito. And, having just been to the farmer’s market where I picked up a new mixer, I was inspired to experiment and I created the Blue Prickly NA Cocktail, a refreshing blend that will surprise your taste buds.

Sier Hill Biscane, Non-Alcoholic Rum Alternative

Blue Prickly Cocktail Ingredients

  • 6 blueberries

  • 3-4 mint leaves

  • 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice

  • 2 oz Seir Hill Biscane (alcohol-free rum alternative)

  • 2 oz Alpenglow Prickly Pear Margarita mixer (Click HERE to order)

How to mix:

Give the mint leaves a little smack between your palms (do it!), then add the leaves and the blueberries to a cocktail shaker. Now, a bit of muddling. If you’re new to this process, you should know that muddling is not meant to pulverize but to provide some gentle crushing merely. This releases the aroma of the mint and the flavors of the blueberries. Add ice and the remaining ingredients. Shake well to chill. Strain into a coupe glass and enjoy. Garnish with a few extra berries for a touch of sophistication.

If you want to embark on a journey of discovery about Seir Hill’s Biscane rum alternative before you run out and buy a bottle, I’m here for you! I have since used this alcohol-free spirit instead of full-proof rum in mojitos and daiquiris, and it works pretty well! Seir Hill’s website (www.seirhill.com) is a treasure trove of additional recipes, their ingredient lists, and nutrition facts labeling. This product has no added sugar; it is gluten-free, and only five calories per serving. This product won a gold medal at the 2024 L.A. Spirits Awards, but you be the judge! They also produce a whiskey alternative, but we’ll save that for another day.
