Sober Word Of The Day + Quote + Reflection From The Daily Llama For The Week of May 16th – 20th

The Daily Llama, by Sober Curator Staci DesRault, brings you short, one-word meditations and a corresponding quote plus a reflection for your complete wool-being (#seewhatwedidthere?) for Monday, May 16 – 20, 2022.

WORD OF THE DAY:  MOTION

MONDAY, MAY 16, 2022

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“If you can’t fly, run. If you can’t run, walk. If you can’t walk, crawl, but by all means, keep moving.” – Martin Luther King, Jr

MEDITATE ON THIS:

Research has long touted the benefits of exercise for mental health, citing an increase in endorphins and a decrease in the stress hormone cortisol as the prime rewards of working out. However, the way you move can impact how you think and feel. A study published in Front Psychology in 2014 showed that people who moved in synchrony with others experienced improvements in self-esteem and feelings of social connection. So go ahead and keep doing those TikTok dances. Science shows it can help you feel better about yourself.

The Daily Llama Fun Fact of the Day:

Today is National Do Something Good for Your Neighbor Day, National Sea Monkey Day, National Piercing Day, National Love a Tree Day, National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day, National Biographer’s Day, and National Barbecue Day. It is also the start of Vesak, and today is Buddha Purnima, Buddha’s birthday.

WORD OF THE DAY:  ILLUMINATION

TUESDAY, MAY 17, 2022

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light.” – Albus Dumbledore, from Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban

MEDITATE ON THIS:

In the field of mental health counseling, “perspective taking” is a cognitive restructuring exercise where we attempt to view our difficult situation from different points of view. It can be a difficult task initially, as most of us are prone to think about things, well, the way we think about things. However, when we step back and practice being an observer of our thoughts and considering how others may view our situation, we can create greater psychological flexibility, which improves our resilience to stress in turbulent times.

The Daily Llama Fun Fact of the Day:

Today is National Idaho Day, Pat Rack Day, National Walnut Day, National Graduation Tassel Day, and National Cherry Cobbler Day.

WORD OF THE DAY:  MANAGEABILITY

WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2022

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary.” – Fred Rogers

MEDITATE ON THIS:

Life is only a burden if we try to carry through it alone. Anything we have experienced is not unique. Someone, somewhere has gone through what we’ve gone through in some way and has felt similar feelings to what we feel. When we share our pain, we may not at first find the people who understand us. But when we do, our pain becomes more manageable when, upon being seen and accepted fully, we are freed from the shame that binds us to our pain.

The Daily Llama Fun Fact of the Day:

Today is Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Day, National Cheese Souffle Day, National HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, National No Dirty Dishes Day, and National Visit Your Relatives Day.

WORD OF THE DAY:  CANDOR

MAY 19, 2022

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, and more unashamed conversation.” – Glenn Close

MEDITATE ON THIS:

The scariest thing we can ever do is tell the truth about who we are. But it is also the bravest, and the most necessary. To live with candor is to live with openness, authenticity, and kindness. The most dangerous entity to humans is not a virus or a substance. The most dangerous thing is shame.

The Daily Llama Fun Fact of the Day:

Today is National May Ray Day, National Devil’s Food Cake Day, and National Barber Mental Health Awareness Day. It is also Lag BaOmer, a Jewish holiday that serves as a “day of joy.”

WORD OF THE DAY:  UNDEFINED

MAY 20, 2022

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“Mental health problems don’t define who you are. They are something you experience. You walk in the rain and you feel the rain, but you are not the rain.” – Matt Haig

MEDITATE ON THIS:

You are more than one thing. You are more than the story you tell. You are more than what others think about you. You are more than what you have endured. You are not defined by any one thing. You are undefined.

The Daily Llama Fun Fact of the Day:

Today is National Pizza Party Day, National Endangered Species Day, National Rescue Dog Day, National Quiche Lorraine Day, National Pick Strawberries Day, National Defense Transportation Day, National Bike to School/Work Days, National Be a Millionaire Day, NASCAR Day, and East Timor Independence Day.
