Sober Sweat: The Afterburn Effect & Why You Should Never Skip Leg Day

Feel the sober burn! Strength training is essential for getting your body into the shape you want and is necessary for burning fat and calories. The more lean muscle you have, the more calories and fat your body burns. Muscle tissue is metabolically active, and fatty tissue is not. This is why strength training will help you increase the number of calories you burn in a day. One pound of muscle burns approximately 8-10 calories per day while at rest, and this is about three times as many calories as fatty tissue burns.

Strength training adds muscle mass, increases metabolism, and has been one of the most effective ways to burn the maximum amount of calories during your workout. After strength training workouts, your body will continue to blast fat and calories long after leaving the gym, known as the afterburn effect.

The scientific name of the afterburn effect is excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). EPOC is the amount of oxygen needed for the body to return to its resting state. The resting state includes restoring oxygen levels, removing lactic acid, repairing muscles, and restoring ATP levels.

ATP = Adenosine 5′-triphosphate, or ATP, is the principal molecule for storing and transferring energy in cells.

Why you should never skip leg day!

Your leg muscles are the largest muscle group in your entire body. The more muscle you have on your body, the more fat you burn over the course of one day. Strong legs = more calories burned without exercise. Lower body strength training is the best workout for blasting calories and shredding fat!
