#QUITLIT Review of Sober is Dope

I’ve been a fan girl of POP since I met him virtually in 2021 on the online recovery community called YANA. A year later, with many Clubhouse rooms, text messages, Zoom calls, and phone calls under our sober belts, we finally met IRL in front of The Met in New York City. So, when POP asked me to help review his book before it was published, it was a real honor to be a tiny part of his project.

Whether you are new to sobriety, or you’ve been trudging the recovery road for years, Sober is Dope will be a great addition to your home library. Personally, I’m a big fan of the affirmations and healing scriptures. It’s the perfect addition to stack on my nightstand for easy access when I’m doing my daily prayers and meditations.

I believe what POP is doing is so important. This is why.

The importance of black men recovering out loud from addiction cannot be overstated. Addiction is a disease that affects people from all walks of life, but it disproportionately impacts black men. The stigma surrounding addiction often prevents people from seeking help. Still, when black men speak openly about their struggles with addiction and their journey to recovery, it helps to break down that stigma and encourages others to seek the help they need. Additionally, the recovery process for black men often involves confronting and overcoming systemic barriers and generational trauma that have contributed to their addiction. By speaking out and sharing their stories, black men can help themselves and inspire others and create a more supportive and compassionate society. As someone who has come to know POP Buchanan well, I believe he is a man of his word who walks his talk and is always willing to serve others.
