Rhythm Of The Night By DeBarge Was A One-Hit-Wonder, And So Am I (Hopefully)

Tuesday Tunes Song of the Week: Rhythm of the Night

Artist: DeBarge

I have heard this song no less than six times over the past week.  When things like that happen, I feel like it’s a sign from the universe to pay attention.  SO naturally I started overthinking…

As a child of the 80s, I assumed that DeBarge was going to be a big part of my adult life.  It turned out they were more in the one-hit-wonder category.  This led me to start thinking about other one-hit wonders and then it struck me…I am a one-hit-wonder.

I am a one-hit-wonder in recovery (hopefully).  I am one of the few who went to in-patient treatment one time and have had continuous recovery ever since. There are others like me but (in my opinion) we are not the norm.  MANY people have to receive treatment multiple times in order to find recovery.

There are also people in recovery who went to one meeting, one therapy session, one running group, etc, and have found recovery.  They too are in the one-hit-wonder crowd. BUT this is rare.

I walked into treatment with no intention of truly staying sober.  I was there because I was hungry, like for food not like motivation hungry. When I arrived in Chicago to begin my journey, I had not eaten food in seven days.  The calories from alcohol are what was keeping me going and the massive amounts of cocaine I was ingesting didn’t do my appetite any favors. I got on the plane from Texas because I knew my family would feed me and I was hungry.  I thought I could manipulate my way back to Texas after a couple of days of detox but THANK GOD my parents had boundaries and drove me a week later to the airport to fly to Minnesota.

It was in the van on the winding drive to my treatment center that I first felt the peace that comes with recovery.  I knew I never wanted to let that feeling go.  Ever since then, recovery has been my focus and hopefully will continue to be.

I can’t speak for all of us in the one-hit-wonder category, but I still question why me?  Why did I get it on the first try??? I will never know and there is peace with that answer as well.  I don’t need to.

PLAY IT AGAIN! Music can instantly transport you to another state of mind and alter your mood in a heartbeat. So, of course, we’re curating the greatest recovery tunes for our The Ultimate Sober Playlist.  This section features select songs that represent some part of our journey and serve as sobriety anthems in reminding us to stay the course. These are the ones that have us saying “Play It Again” and always end up on repeat. No decade or genre is off-limits. Happy listening!

What’s your sobriety theme song?  If there is a song you think should be on our playlist, we want to hear about it.  Send your requests to [email protected]
