Let’s Address Dark VS Stout – Are They The Mysterious Ringer?

Good morrow and fair morn to you. We are being joined once again by Atmos Brewing, from the great state of Idaho. We’ve previously discussed their Golden Ale and Double IPA, but this week is a special treat and may even beg the question: is Atmos Brewing a ringer? A sleeper? Are they hording their brews in sacks of potatoes releasing them only for those in the know?!? Or, maybe they just have a distribution channel that doesn’t bring them around me very much. I mean that seems more likely.

We are drinking Cosmos NA Peanut Butter Milk Dark this week by Atmos Brewing. Let’s first address the trend in how NA breweries are labeling their stouts and porters, now simply using the term ‘dark.’ While existing literature on the subject is hard to find, the NA groups on social media seemed to believe that a federal law was passed that no longer allowed NA breweries to use the terms ‘stout’ and ‘porter’ because they weren’t those things. Considering most dealcoholizing process is simply taking the fully brewed alcoholic beer and removing the alcohol, I vehemently disagree with these findings, but my opinion means nothing, so I digress.

I like big cans and I can not lie

First off, let’s address the awesome fact that Atmos Brewing uses 16 oz cans. We all know how much I love 16 oz cans and this is an A+ in my book. After you crack the large can and pour it into a glass, you can immediately see the delicious, stout, dark beauty poor perfectly with a tan head and a dark I-can’t-see-through-the-other-side beer. The aromas that come off the top of the bubbly head are that of lactose, coffee, chocolate, and last but not least, peanut butter. The smells alone got me super excited!

How does it taste?

Upon first taste Atmos Brewing does not disappoint! Peanut Butter Stouts (or darks for you federalies) are one of the odd commonalities that I have found across three breweries now, and Atmos Brewing’s decision to add in lactose and make it a milk stout is nothing short of genius. The flavor profile that dances around my tongue and tickles my taste buds is exactly what I want in a milk stout laced with peanut butter sexiness. This is God’s juice.

Untappd gives Cosmos NA Peanut Butter Milk Dark by Atmos Brewing a 3.7 out of 5, and I would even bump that up to a 4 or 4.2. They did a great job with this one and I am excited to start actively hunting down more brews from this diamond in the Idaho, and you should to!
