Is Wolverine An Alcoholic? Exploring Wolverine’s Relationship with Alcohol in the Latest Summer Blockbuster Deadpool x Wolverine
As a self-proclaimed superhero aficionado, Disney fan, and Star Wars enthusiast, there’s nothing quite like immersing oneself in the cool embrace of a movie theater during the scorching, sticky summer months. The anticipation of catching the latest flick alongside my adult son, Jakob, for this summer’s blockbuster hit Deadpool x Wolverine filled me with a mix of excitement and nostalgia. From savoring buttery popcorn for dinner to donning 3-D glasses and eagerly awaiting the trailers, these movie outings have become cherished moments shared with my favorite human. We’ve been going to Marvel movies together for as long as he can remember.
While my superhero roster usually includes Iron Man, Wonder Woman, and Captain Marvel, the allure of Marvel films holds a special place in my heart—second only to the galaxy far, far away of Star Wars. As we settled in for Deadpool x Wolverine, I found myself intrigued by the character of Wolverine, a figure previously unfamiliar to me despite the numerous films dedicated to his saga. Please don’t hate me, but I’m just not a Hugh Jackman fan. I’ve never been able to exactly pinpoint why.
The keen observer in me couldn’t help but notice Wolverine’s frequent encounters with alcohol throughout the film. This sparked a curiosity that led me to ponder: Is Wolverine an alcoholic?
This sparked a curiosity that led me to ponder: Is Wolverine an alcoholic?
Drawing from my own journey of recovery, I’ve developed a keen eye for depictions of drinking in cinema, a habit born not out of triggering sentiments but rather a deep fascination. (Which could also probably be described as an obsession of the mind, A ‘hem.) Wolverine’s portrayal, often seen with a bottle in hand or resorting to drastic measures like consuming rubbing alcohol, struck a chord within me. The character’s perpetual state of melancholy intertwined with his relationship with alcohol painted a poignant narrative against the backdrop of the fast-paced action and irreverent humor of the film.
Upon further reflection post-movie, my curiosity led me down a rabbit hole of research on Wolverine’s potential struggle with alcoholism. Contrary to initial suspicions, most sources suggested that Wolverine’s unique regenerative abilities rendered him resistant to the effects of alcohol—a trait that set him apart from traditional depictions of alcoholism.
There was a scene near the end of the film that resonated deeply with me as a person in recovery. The film’s poignant message about embracing one’s past mistakes struck a chord. The dialogue between Wolverine, Deadpool, and the authoritative lady figure at the Time Variance Authority (TVA) encapsulates a powerful truth: our past experiences, both triumphs and tribulations, shape us into who we are today.
As I reflect on my own journey of sobriety spanning over 18 years (#ODAAT), I find solace in the notion that my past struggles serve as a beacon of hope for those navigating similar paths. Just as Wolverine’s complexities transcend his struggles, so too do our challenges pave the way for growth and resilience.
While the constant presence of alcohol in a film’s narrative may not align with my personal preferences, I appreciate the nuance and artistry that Deadpool embodies. Sharp, witty, and steeped in dark humor, the film masterfully weaves a tapestry of storytelling that captivates audiences while shedding light on complex themes. Side note: Keep your eyes sharp for all the easter eggs scattered throughout the film. I’m certain I only caught about 25% of them.
When I revisit Deadpool x Wolverine for a second viewing, I will look forward to delving deeper into its layers of meaning and embracing the nuanced portrayal of characters like Wolverine, whose struggles mirror our own in unexpected ways.
HAPPY EVERY HOUR: Shout out to our favorite sober Gossip Girl, Blake Lively, for her cameo appearance in the film.
