Important Lessons Adversity Can Teach You

It is a fact that just about everyone faces difficulties in life. Adversity comes in all shapes and sizes, including physical, mental, emotional, financial, and more. While the type of adversity one faces in life requires different resources to get through it, they all offer something or a lesson to be learned. In other words, while adversity is harsh, it still brings benefits to your life that you may not otherwise learn or gain.

The following are important lessons adversity can teach you:

Gratitude and Positivity

While increased positivity may sound counterintuitive while facing adversity, it is still true. The lesson you learn after facing adversity allows you to stop and recognize that even through hardship, you still have richness surrounding you that can make it easier to cope or get through it successfully.

In turn, these thoughts can transform into being more thankful for what you currently have rather than focusing on what you don’t have or what brought you to this challenge. The more grateful you are, the more positive you become. This gives you the tools that you need to be happier and more successful in the future.

Compassion and Empathy

The uncomfortable energy you gain from adversity can be transformed into compassion and understanding of the world and those around you. As they commonly say, fitting yourself into other people’s shoes grows your compassion and empathy because you understand what it truly feels like too. It allows you to gain a new perspective and look at others through a lens of understanding instead of judgment.

Self-Reliance and Self-Efficacy

Adversity seems to slow down time, increasing self-awareness and mindfulness. You learn more about yourself and what you can and cannot handle at this time. Over time, these experiences allow you to gain more confidence and understanding of what it takes to succeed no matter what challenges face your way. Seeing that you have the strength and ability to adapt and make it through adversity further increases your confidence and proves you can be self-reliant and efficient.

In the end, adversity teaches you many beautiful things in life. Without adversity, you may never understand compassion or have empathy for others. Both these things are needed for society to flourish. Without adversity, negativity and selfishness prosper. Through adversity, you learn self-awareness, self-relevancy, and gratitude to live each day as your best.
