How to Have a Sober Cinco De Mayo in Phoenix, AZ!

Cinco de Mayo may have a bad reputation as a “drinking holiday,” but in the Valley of the Sun, there are many ways to celebrate sans alcohol! Check out this curated list of fun sober activities to do by Contributor Kristin Horstman, Founder of Brighten Your Life Coaching.

Sober Cinco De Mayo Events Worth Checking Out!

Fetching Dog is a locally owned, family pet food, toys and supplies store. Owners, Becci and Bryce Scott have been involved in animal rescue work, here in the valley, since the mid 1990s.

You can stop by their new Barkery cafe all week long and get into party mode with their Cinco de Mayo Photo Booth! Try on a sombrero and have some fun with your buen perro!

OLE! On May 5th from 5:30-6:30 pm, celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Las Cabras con Yoga!  World-famous, specially trained goats, interact with you throughout an introductory yoga class, suitable for all ages and abilities. Maisy, the cow, moo-tivates you and loves hugs. Bring the family down for an Arizona Bucket List experience.

A free Cinco de Mayo block party will beat the Arizona Latino Arts and Cultural Center on May 5. The South Mountain Community College mariachi band, a fire spinner, and Latin American folk dancers are among the performers, and there will also be vendors, art, and food trucks. Source AZCentral.com

Casual Food

Tocaya is where health-conscious fare meets craveable Mexican flavors. They offer salads, tacos, burritos, bowls, and quesadillas in a sophisticated, fresh-casual setting. Tocaya’s meat and fish offerings are 100% free of hormones, steroids, and antibiotics and accommodate various vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free preferences.

They have many fun non-alcoholic options, including freshly made aqua frescas, Topo Chico sparkling water, and De La Calle Tepache (made from fermented fresh fruit, this authentic Mexican beverage is rich in vitamins C & D, contains probiotics, and is less than 40 calories).

Party Vibes

Blanco Cocina + Cantina provides a festive yet laid-back atmosphere and serves delicious dishes like Cheese Crisps (aka Mexican Pizza) and the Chimichanga – a Sonoran regional staple. Blanco will offer Chimichangas with decadent fillings such as short rib machaca or braised chicken. Other show-stealers include Tiger Shrimp Fajitas with spicy garlic butter and tacos on handmade corn tortillas with Slow Cooked BBQ, roasted corn slaw, pickled onion, and crema fresca.

Blanco will be celebrating on Friday with music from 6-9 pm. They’ll be featuring a DJ inside and a mariachi band outside. You’ll find Athletic Brew Lite & a couple of agua frescas on the menu for fun NA options!

Joyride Taco House is a vibrant and laid-back restaurant with two locations in the Phoenix metro area, one in Central Phoenix and one in Downtown Gilbert, that will satisfy your deepest taco cravings.

From May 5 to 7, taco enthusiasts can enjoy the Agave Lounge extension at both Joyride locations, filled with festive décor, a mobile bar, and extended seating. Come to the patios to indulge in chips and salsa or taco favorites or bring the Cinco party home with Joyride’s Cruiser Pack to-go, including braised meat and tortillas, veggies for garnish, rice, beans, guacamole, chips & salsa, and six classic churros. It’s easy to skip the tequila this year and enjoy almond horchata, agua frescas, and Athletic Brewing Run Wild. Source Arizona Foothills Magazine.

Local restaurants with a cool atmosphere and Cinco de Mayo-themed NA options:

Sante’s menu is organic, conscience-forward, and features local & seasonal ingredients. They accommodate every palate and dietary restriction (including keto, vegan, paleo, vegetarian, and gluten-free) and have a rather extensive mocktail menu. For Cinco, I’d recommend the delicious Mockarita, made with Spiritless Jalisco 55, DHOS Orange, Fresh Lime Juice & Agave.

Cook & Craft’s main focus is on supporting local Arizona businesses. Their menu features a variety of comfort classics, gastropub flavors, vegetarian, vegan & kid-friendly options. They also offer lot of NA options, but for Cinco, I would recommend Athletic Brewing Co.’s Cerveza Atletica, which is a refreshing Mexican-inspired Light Copper brew.

If staying in is more your jam this year, then break out the blender and whip up your own homemade refreshing aqua frescas:
