Flashback February Edition On This Week’s Tuesday Tunes With Sober Curator Lauren McLaughlin

Flashback February Edition!

Tuesday Tunes Song of the Week: Rockin Robin

Artist: Bobby Day

Flashbacks in recovery are normal and happen to everyone.  I can be sitting in my office with a patient and all of sudden a memory is sparked of me being in some house in Texas filled with dealers and their packers, guns, and drugs everywhere. Cut to me just walking around asking for more (because one is never enough).  I joke and say that I am 43 years old but I can’t remember half of my life due to those memories just being gone thanks to my addiction.

This song is a flashback of a different kind…

Recovery can also bring flashbacks of good things too.

Rockin Robin is a song that helped me discover my joy of dancing.  I have vivid memories of being at my friend Jill’s house in her den with a big wrap-around couch, jumping on the cushions to this song.  Every time that memory floods my system it brings me extreme joy.  When I hear Bobby Day and his little musical tweets I am instantly transported to a time of laughter, movement and innocence.

It’s a memory of the before life.  Before the chaos, before the drama, before the hurts, and before the trauma.  Thankfully this is a memory that was not stolen by addiction.  It is there for me to pull up anytime and feel all the sunshine joy that it brings.

What is sunshine joy? I describe it as a memory that is so bright and vivid and filled with light that is magical.

What song transports you to a world filled with sunshine joy?

PLAY IT AGAIN! Music can instantly transport you to another state of mind and alter your mood in a heartbeat. So, of course, we’re curating the greatest recovery tunes for our The Ultimate Sober Playlist.  This section features select songs that represent some part of our journey and serve as sobriety anthems in reminding us to stay the course. These are the ones that have us saying “Play It Again” and always end up on repeat. No decade or genre is off-limits. Happy listening!

What’s your sobriety theme song?  If there is a song you think should be on our playlist, we want to hear about it.  Send your requests to [email protected]
