Tuesday Tunes: Flash Back February Edition

We are going way back to the year 1998 (seriously how is that 24 years ago??).  Picture it: a college dive bar in Charleston, IL, a group of sorority girls all wearing Steve Madden Platform Slides (if you know you know) and bootcut jeans and LOTS of BEER, and this song comes on….it was 90s mayhem.

This flashback is to a time when drinking was still fun for me.  I loved those days: no cares in the world, hanging with my “sisters”, enjoying college life.  Shout out KD’s!

However, even when life was “good”, deep down I knew I was different.  I was the one who planned the party for the weekend on Monday.  I noticed my friends didn’t do that but I just thought I was a “planner.” The drive to drink consumed a lot of my time.  Turns out I was already well on my way to full-blown alcoholism. 

A quote I heard from a speaker in treatment has resonated with me for years:  “drinking was fun until it wasn’t.”  This song is a reminder that drinking at one point in my life was in fact fun….and then it wasn’t.

To me, it’s ok to remember the fun that was had because some of it was actually fun.  It’s ok to admit that.  It’s not ok, for me, to focus on the fun only.  It’s that old saying…play the tape forward.
