Energetics of Citrus Oils

During our journey to recover from alcohol use, it is only natural that a lot of stagnated energy will be released as we let go of our addictive behaviors.  Citrus essential oils can offer powerful support in the release of stagnated energy from our bodies, and they can encourage a healthier, more vibrant flow of energy throughout.

Let’s explore the potential energetic power of four specific Citrus essential oils.

BERGAMOT (Citrus bergamia)

All citrus oils are inherently uplifting, but what sets Bergamot apart is that it is also extremely calming.  This can make the use of Bergamot essential oil a very valuable tool in recovering from addictive behavior, because it facilitates a smooth release of blocked energy and provides a sedative effect at the same time.  The reason for this may be the presence of the chemical component, linalyl acetate (also found in lavender essential oil) which is known to be calming.

SWEET ORANGE (Citrus sinensis)

The orange has a long historical use as a digestive aid, as it was believed to energetically unblock the liver, stomach and intestines.  It can be used as an aid to “keep things moving along”. Sweet Orange is a wonderful tool for those who expect everything to go a certain way and find it difficult to adjust to surprises. That is because Sweet Orange can have sedative effects on the body, helping individuals to have a more relaxed outlook.

LEMON (Citrus limon)

Lemons have been valued historically for their ability to detoxify the blood and combat infections.  Energetically, Lemon essential oil is recognized for its ability to open the heart more effectively than other citrus oils.  It has been used for its antidepressant effects, because of its happy uplifting energy.

GRAPEFRUIT (Citrus paradisi)

What sets Grapefruit essential oil apart from other citrus is its particularly cooling energy.  It is useful in dealing with hot conditions and hot emotions.  As one proceeds through the recovery process, a lot of anger and resentment may erupt.  This is when Grapefruit essential oil can be especially useful, in that it can help clean out hostile energy.

THREE CITRUS OIL SAFETY CONCERNS TO KEEP IN MIND:

  • Certain citrus essential oils extracted through the pressing of fruit rind can be phototoxic. Phototoxicity is a skin reaction that occurs when the essential oil is applied to the skin and then exposed to UV rays.

  • Citrus essential oils can be easily oxidized which can cause skin irritation.  Store them in a dark cool place.

  • Certified aromatherapists do not recommend a drop of lemon essential oil in a glass of water because oil and water do not mix.  Therefore, the essential oil remains intact and can cause damage to the throat, esophagus, and in the digestive tract.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Diffuse any combination of these citrus essential oils to reap the energy cleansing and uplifting benefits.  Avoid the use of citrus essential oils at night, as they can be quite invigorating.
