Sober October Challenge: Embarking on a Sober Curious Adventure – What Led Me to “Put It Down”

First Dry January and now Sober October? When did taking a break from alcohol become so trendy? What’s with the trend in sober, curious adventures?

In a world that both celebrates and mourns with a clink of a glass, a new movement has taken the stage – the Sober Curious Movement. From Dry January to Sober October, there’s an undeniable shift in the air. But why? Well, because it’s not just about quitting the drinks; it’s about embracing a lifestyle that’s truly liberating. And guess what? It’s happening, and it’s happening now.

Let me introduce myself: I’m Sarah Olsen. I’m a wife, a mother, a kickboxer, and have a soft spot for all creatures – from furry to scaly (well, only one scaly creature, a lizard named Lizzy). My journey might sound familiar to you: I was a single mother striving to create a life of abundance for my daughter and myself. But life’s twists and turns had me questioning my self-worth, especially after facing two divorces by the time I hit 30. Life threw its curveballs, and I was caught in relationships that left me grappling with my identity.

Now, expect a story of something other than rock-bottom revelations here. This is a story of discovery, empowerment, and transformation – one that might resonate with you. I wasn’t your typical image of an alcoholic you see in the movies, but I knew I needed a change. My journey to that change was marked by moments of realization that made me question my choices and set me on a new path.

One of those moments was when I covertly tossed an empty wine bottle into the trash, strategically covering it with junk mail and banana peels. Then it hit me. I was hiding my drinking. And it wasn’t the first time. Another moment that struck a chord was my wedding day (yep, wedding #3, cross your fingers). It was supposed to be perfect, and it was, but the photographs told a different story. Amidst the celebrations, I saw a reflection I didn’t recognize – a sweaty, inflamed version of myself, eyes half-closed, lost in a cloud of alcohol. To top it off, under the guise of being a responsible parent, I sent my daughter away after the ceremony. I thought it was the responsible thing to do not to have her around all that drinking. But the truth is, I chose drinking over having her be there to celebrate our new family.

I already felt the pull that I was drinking too much. I took breaks and tried to moderate. But these moments were wake-up calls that stirred a desire for real change within me. And that’s when I stumbled upon the Sober Curious Movement. It’s a movement that challenges societal norms, urges us to rethink our relationship with alcohol, and explores a lifestyle that’s not just about quitting drinks – it’s about gaining freedom.

My journey of transformation began with intentionality. I embraced what I call “The Big 3”:

  1. Why did I crave this change?

  2. What my ultimate goal was?

  3. How my life could transform.

Instead of counting down the days until I could drink again, I immersed myself in self-reflection and reaching out to other women who were trying to do the same thing, and the results were nothing short of magical.

With the clarity that comes from mindful reflection, my perspective shifted. I savored simple pleasures – quality time with my daughter, excelling at work, and making choices aligned with my true self. Guilt was replaced by pride, and doubt was overshadowed by confidence. A newfound sense of purpose emerged.

As I delved into personal development and shared my journey, I realized what I needed to do. I wanted to give back and give hope and support to others seeking liberation from societal norms and the grasp of alcohol. I envisioned a community that celebrated growth, empowerment, and authenticity – and thus, Put It Down Lifestyle was born.
