I Learned How to Love From Heroin by Alex Schotten
Some books leave a quiet yet profound impact on their readers, and Alex’s poetry collection, I Learned How to Love From Heroin, does precisely that. From first glancing at the title and dedication, I felt a deep connection to this work. As a person in recovery, these seemingly simple elements were powerful enough to ground me in a shared experience before I even turned the first page.

Sir Anthony Hopkins Celebrates ‘Unexpectedly Long Life’ After 49 Years of Sobriety
Sir Anthony Hopkins recently celebrated an extraordinary milestone: 49 years of sobriety. Reflecting on his journey in a heartfelt Instagram video, the legendary actor shared how his decision to stop drinking on December 29, 1975, transformed his life. Hopkins candidly recalled the moment he realized he needed help, after waking up with no memory of how he ended up in Arizona. Joining a support group and embracing sobriety allowed him to build a life filled with joy and purpose. “I’ve had more fun in these 49 years than ever,” he remarked, encouraging others facing similar struggles to seek help.
Hopkins, who is nearing his 87th birthday, expressed deep gratitude for his “unexpectedly long life” and the opportunities he continues to enjoy in his illustrious career. As an advocate for recovery, he reminded his followers that addiction is a condition, not a weakness, and emphasized the importance of reaching out for support. With humility and wisdom, the two-time Oscar winner stands as a powerful testament to the transformative power of sobriety and the resilience of the human spirit.

The Man in the Iron Mask
Today was another difficult day. I woke up with the nausea that had been hounding me for weeks, preventing me from getting the sustenance I needed to feel happy. Everything felt off from the beginning, as it has been, as I am again afraid it will be forever. You see, the darkness has become ever more painful because my life is filled with light. I’ve done the things I’m supposed to do, become the man I’m supposed to be… I am living unmasked…

Understanding the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act
October marked the 16th anniversary of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), also known as the Parity Act. This landmark law mandates equal treatment in insurance coverage for mental health and substance use disorders. Enacted in 2008, the Parity Act was a significant step toward addressing the discrimination faced by individuals seeking mental health or addiction care, aiming to level the playing field by ensuring these services are covered comparably to physical health treatments.
