PUBLISHER’S NOTE
It’s Monday, and the Olympics are in full swing. I don’t know about you, but I have been glued to my TV taking in the gymnastics, swimming, skateboarding, surfing, and just the overall spirit of sport (and this is coming from a girlie who does NOT sport). Simone Biles Ditches the Booze as she Competes for Gold in Paris
When Simone touched down in Paris, she met with her BFF and teammate Jordan Chiles. The pair toasted with a glass of non-alcoholic champagne to commemorate the occasion. Back in Tokyo, Biles dropped out of the Olympic games due to complications due to her mental health. Biles is a person who lives with ADHD and an anxiety disorder. Her decision marked a historic moment and brought mental health as a global conversation.
“It’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to take a break,” she wrote in a 2021 Instagram post. “Mental health is just as important as physical health. You can’t neglect one without neglecting the other.”
When Biles was two years old, she was placed into foster care due to her Mother’s, Shanon Biles, substance use disorder and alcohol misuse. Shanon has been “clean and sober since 2007” and is proud of the fact she reestablished her relationship with Simone.
Despite the difficult upbringing before being adopted by the age of 6, Simone feels "like I wouldn't be where I am unless that turning point happened. I would still be Simone Biles, probably not Simone Biles that everybody else knows, the world knows. But I also believe everything happens for a reason and I'm forever grateful for that because I definitely got a second shot at life."
Because of her Mother’s recovery and Bile’s upbringing, she is a recovery ally and has spoken in front of Congress on the importance of substance use prevention and the dangers of underage drinking. But why address Congress? “We need their leadership in order to keep the kids safe and alcohol-free,” Biles said. This address was back in 2017 and came a few weeks after Biles turned 21.
I don’t know about you, but I will be rooting for Simone and all of Team USA for the gold this Olympics. Thank you Simone for showing us that recovery from trauma and anxiety is possible.

Man’s Search for Meaning
First things first, let me tell you about this book: “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor E. Frankl is a transformative book that offers insights into the human experience and the search for purpose and meaning in life. This book is always on the MUST-READ lists of all the self-help gurus and book recommendations accounts I follow on various social media platforms. So, of course I had to read it.

Uncovering the Path to Sobriety: App Review of the Brand New Uncovery App
I am so excited to be doing this new app review and even more excited about the app itself, mainly because this is the kind of support I could have used when I was #sobercurious seven years ago. It is so important to lessen those feelings of aloneness and to find a safe space to ask questions about changing one’s relationship with alcohol without feeling judged.

Alcohol-Free Travel in Bali: Hangovers Not Included
Over eighteen months ago, my business partner, Susie Streelman, founder of Zeroproof Experiences (ZPE), told me she had decided to arrange an alcohol-free trip to Bali. This was a place way outside of my comfort zone.
SOBER SPOTLIGHT
Interview with Tristan Klimak of Choose Life Sober Adventures
Choose Life Sober Adventures is one of a handful of small companies specializing in group travel for non-drinkers. I’ve traveled twice with Choose Life, once on an action-packed trip to Costa Rica and once on a hike-filled journey to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley of Peru. We did all sorts of the usual fun adventure travel things like kayaking, ziplining, and eating at good restaurants. The Choose Life facilitator leads daily yoga classes and a nightly recovery meeting, which makes for faster bonding between participants than you’d see in your average group tour.

Unveiling Netflix’s ‘One Day’: A Comprehensive Review of the Heartrending New Series
This weekend, I watched One Day. Each of the 14 episodes is a moment in time in the relationship of two people, Dexter and Emma. They meet at their university graduation dance, hearts collide, and they are forever woven together but rarely in the right phase at the right time to get together. Alcohol is ever-present throughout.
See you next week!
