Kendrick Lamar: How Sobriety Shapes His Art and Legacy

Kendrick Lamar has carved out a legendary career in hip-hop while staying true to his values, including a commitment to sobriety. Growing up in a household where partying and substance use were common, he saw firsthand the damage that drugs and alcohol could cause. Determined to avoid that path, Kendrick has remained drug- and alcohol-free, using his platform to advocate against substance use, particularly in hip-hop culture. He has been vocal about rejecting trends that glamorize drug use, calling them “corny” and harmful to impressionable listeners.

His sobriety has not only fueled his creative genius but also shaped the raw vulnerability in his music. Tracks like Mother I Sober from Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers delve into themes of trauma, addiction, and healing, proving that rap’s most powerful moments don’t need to be fueled by excess. Kendrick’s dedication to mental health and authenticity makes him a standout figure in an industry often synonymous with indulgence. As he continues to push boundaries—both musically and culturally—his sobriety remains a testament to his discipline, resilience, and commitment to uplifting his community.

Finding a Higher Power & Stoic Wisdom

Welcome to Step 2 of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.).  In  Step 1, we admitted our powerlessness over alcohol and that our lives had become unmanageable. The focus of Step 1 was to be honest with ourselves and surrender. Step 2 reads, “We came to be aware that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.” Working on this step offers us a path from hopelessness to hope.

Healing Trauma with Yoga and Other Body-Centered Practices

I’m speaking to what worked for me in my recovery. My substance abuse was rooted in trauma, and I went through a lot of talk therapy and a lot of physical therapy to try to process some of that. It didn’t serve me well because I was not ever able to articulate what was happening for me without being re-traumatized. For me, having to go inward and transform from the inside out was how I was able to then become sober. I don’t know that that’s true for everyone.

Falling in Love with Cacao: The Hormonal Harmony Superfood

Cacao is often touted as a superfood, and for good reason. This powerful plant is rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, polyphenols, flavonoids, theobromine, phenylethylamine, magnesium, and iron. Alexander Humboldt, a noted naturalist, once stated that never in nature is there such nutritional richness packed into a single small space as found in a cacao bean. These nutrients are crucial for our heart, brain, nervous system, and immune system health, making cacao a true marvel.

A Beautiful Problem—Staying in Touch

Recovery has gifted me so many things, but the gift that overwhelms me the most is the love it has enabled me to bear. It’s a beautiful thing, really, but oh, my Lord, can it be overwhelming. I’m blessed with so much love and connection that I haven’t learned how to carry it all.

Staying in touch with everyone I care about feels like an impossible task—not because I don’t want to but because I miss them so damn much. It’s the ironic and antithetical truth: that I miss people too much to give them a call.

See you next week!
