Elton John Celebrates 34 Years of Sobriety + Mobilize Recovery Tour Announcement

PUBLISHER’S NOTE
It’s Monday, and I am feeling the post Olympic blues. The closing ceremony last night featured a daredevil dive from Tom Cruise as he delivered the Olympic flag to LA to pass off the torch for the 2028 games, a performance by everyone’s favorite Olympics fan Snoop Dogg, and some incredible musical performances like by rising french star Zaho de Sagazan and a stunning rendition of “My Way” by Yseult.

This week we are celebrating a sober legend, Sir Elton John, who is 34 years sober as of July 29th, 2024. He serves as Eminem’s sponsor and helped fashion designer Tom Cridland to enter into recovery. Today and always, let’s celebrate those who helped us enter this incredible journey of sobriety.

Elton John Celebrates 34 Years of Sobriety

Elton John Brits GIF by BRIT Awards

Elton John is celebrating another milestone on his journey with sobriety.

The "Rocket Man" singer shared a photo to social media of an Alcoholics Anonymous sobriety coin, announcing in the caption he's been sober for the last 34 years.

"34 years ago today, I was a broken man," he wrote in the post shared to his Instagram account, "I finally summoned up the courage to say 3 words that would change my life: 'I need help'. Thank-you to all the selfless people who have helped me on my journey through sobriety. I am eternally grateful."

Though he's proud of how far he's come, John told Variety that he also attributes his success to support from his loved ones, especially his husband David Furnish.

“I am a survivor,” John said. “I’ve survived a lot of things. Life is full of pitfalls, even when you’re sober. I can deal with them now because I don’t have to run away and hide and I have someone wonderful in my life to help me through them."

British Summertime Sobriety: An Interview with Annie Davies

Since joining The Sober Curator, I’ve become increasingly aware of the drinking-related cultural differences between the U.S. and the U.K. It’s not so much that drinkers over here are “worse” or that more British people suffer from alcohol use disorder and addiction. It’s more that the attitude and societal view of drinking are different.
